Access, variety, growth. Book Trust offers a great, constantly updated selection of books that children actually want to read. As children’s interests change, the book selections grow with their abilities interests, giving them access to books and topics they want to explore.

Ownership. The vast majority of our participating students previously owned few—or no—books. Through Book Trust, students take enormous pride in selecting their books every month, sharing them with classmates, and in growing their collection. Books are treasures to our children, and many are shocked and honored to realize that adults value their interests enough to gift them with choice in what they read.

Fluency through repetition. Readings of favorite titles strongly improve reading fluency and increase comprehension. Children unconsciously apply these skills and background knowledge to new material; they expand their ability to absorb knowledge in other aspects of their education and lives.

Whole-family Enrichment. Book Trust builds family literacy. Often, Book Trust books are the first our families have ever owned. Brothers and sisters model participating siblings’ behaviors and have access to their books. Younger children insist that their parents read aloud to them from the growing collection of books in the house. Often parents begin to add to their child’s allotted Book Trust budget to allow them to purchase additional books—a significant marker of changing priorities in the household.

Celebration & Sharing of Books. Through celebrating the arrival of each month’s books, sharing their selections, and watching each other enjoy reading, children participating in Book Trust create a true community of readers in classrooms and entire schools.  Book Trust kids create spontaneous book clubs, give each other thoughtful recommendations, and together become savvy consumers of the written word!

Scholastic, our distributor. Scholastic provides an excellent selection of books and a streamlined order and delivery process already present in most schools across the U.S.  Through Scholastic, we’re able to keep Book Trust’s operations extremely cost-effective, give children the best value we’ve found for each dollar they spend, and expand classroom libraries at no cost (see below)!  Although we work closely with Scholastic, the two organizations are unrelated – Book Trust is an independent 501(c)(3).

Classroom & School Benefits. For every dollar students spend through Book Trust, teachers accrue Scholastic bonus points redeemable for books and resources, expanding classroom libraries at no cost. In this way, Book Trust benefits schools, teachers and students for years to come.
