CHAPTER ONE · A PROMISING PARTNERSHIP

There's nothing like the joy and power of reading.

Books inspire, transport, challenge, and comfort us. They shape our lives, offer us an escape, and allow us to experience worlds beyond our own. Consider the childhood books that allowed you to experience the magic of reading. Now imagine sharing that magic with 40,000 elementary school students in Philadelphia.

This school year, you can give the gift of literacy to students across Philadelphia.

Book Trust, through a partnership with the School District of Philadelphia, has embarked on a four-year partnership that seeks to expand Book Trust’s reach to all of the District’s 148 elementary schools and an estimated 40,000 kindergarten to third-grade students. The partnership is made possible by a $1.3 million lead grant from the William Penn Foundation, who along with local and national supporters like you, are collectively investing in the early literacy of an entire city.

Book Trust's program is rooted in an intentional focus on equity, to ensure that access to books and the agency to choose books of interest, is provided to those who need it the most. Over the course of the school year, Book Trust engages students to choose, read, and own books every month of the school year, helping them build home libraries and cultivating literacy-rich communities.

In low-income areas, there is an average of just one book for every 300 children - Book Trust and its partners are working to change this.

Providing access to books of choice, and deploying parent engagement strategies-which help families support their child's literacy journey-have never been more important.

ACCESS

Book Trust has partnered with Scholastic Book Clubs since our inception. Children choose books from Scholastic flyers every month of the school year.

CHOICE

Readers choose books that resonate with their interests. Books are offered in English and Spanish, and feature a diverse array of topics, characters and storylines so that all children have the opportunity to see themselves reflected on the page.

CELEBRATION

Students and teachers celebrate the arrival of books each month, inspiring a love of reading throughout the school year and summer.

FAMILY ENGAGEMENT

Via family-focused resources, virtual and in-person read-alouds as well as home libraries, we engage entire families in reading.

REACHING DISTRICT GOALS

Book Trust partners with the District and with the Read by 4th Campaign to effect positive change in childhood literacy rates in Philadelphia. We're supporting the District in achieving its Action Plan 3.0 goals, specifically Anchor Goal 2, which states that 100% of 8-year-old students will read on grade level.

CHAPTER TWO · REACHING EVERY STUDENT

We invite your support to continue expanding our mission, building a lifelong love of reading for students in Philadelphia.

With 74% of K-3 students in Philadelphia not reading on grade level, our program has never been more important.

Our goal is to add 25 books to the home libraries of every elementary child by the 2022/2023 school year and we can get there -- together.

CHAPTER THREE · SUPPORT OUR MISSION

Why Give?

Every child deserves to choose and own books in order to cultivate a lifelong love of literacy.

When students are given the opportunity to choose their own books, they in turn become more motivated readers.

75% of children who are not proficient readers by the end of 3rd grade are 4 times less likely to graduate high school.

Access to books supports success in the classroom and beyond.

Join Book Trust to become an equity game changer. Support the joy and power of reading for every K-3 student in the School District of Philadelphia.
